Remote Work Tips for the COVID-19 Situation

In these challenging times, remote work has become the norm. However, it might be difficult sometimes to reach the same productivity level at home. IFSE brings you tips to help you make the most of the current situation.

  1. Plan your tasks: Plan your workweek by defining objectives for each day. Then by the end of each workday, define the exact tasks to be completed the day after. This will help you perform better and deliver on time. Go a step further and automate tasks by using tools like “workflow” and “IFTT”.
  2. Get the correct setup: Designate a workspace in your home and tailor it for your needs. Having that workspace creates a clear distinction in your mind between your work area and your relaxation area. This will ensure you are focusing and performing your best. Once you have created your workspace, ensure you have all the required equipment to complete your tasks. You might need a second display, a printer, a notepad … Make sure you have everything you need to get your work done.   
  3. Diversify your setting: Even though you may have a designated workspace, it’s always a good idea to get up and move around. You might get stuck on a project or experience a block when trying to solve a problem. Get up and change your environment to help you overcome these issues. You could try reading on a comfy chair or couch or walking around while on the phone with a client or colleague. Don’t let not going out prevent you from being productive. These small changes will have the same effect by refreshing and stimulating your brain helping you overcome any bottlenecks.
  4. Focus on your work: Focusing on the task at hand could become difficult when so many distractions are just steps away, but we have got you covered. First, always turn off your personal phone or use the do not disturb mode. Second, use browser extensions such as “stayfocused” or “strictworkflow” to ensure you do not lose time on irrelevant websites. Finally define focus periods and break periods when starting your day. This ensures you always have a break period to look forward to and do any task on your mind other than work.
  5. Take regular breaks: As mentioned earlier, planning breaks helps you ensure optimal focus during your work periods. In addition, breaks help rest your eyes if you are continuously facing a screen while working. They also help stimulate blood circulation if you stand up and move around your space. If you have a balcony or a yard, go out for some fresh air. You could also incorporate regular stretching exercises.
  6. Include social interactions: You can use tools such as video calls and emails to talk to your colleagues and clients. However, to avoid burnout, make sure you stay in touch with your loved ones. Although you may not be able to interact in person, calling a family member or a friend can still bring a smile to your face. Such interactions should be included in your routine on a regular basis.
